In articulating a bold vision of regional prosperity grounded in full citizenship and economic power for African Americans, this banker, lawyer, and visionary would play a key role in the fight for racial and economic equality throughout North Carolina. Utilizing previously unexamined sources from the John Hervey Wheeler Collection at the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library, this biography explores the black freedom struggle through the life of North Carolina's most influential black power broker. After graduating from Morehouse College, Wheeler returned to Durham and began a decades-long career at Mechanics and Farmers (M&F) Bank. He started as a teller and rose to become bank president in 1952. In 1961, President Kennedy appointed Wheeler to the President's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity, a position in which he championed equal rights for African Americans and worked with Vice President Johnson to draft civil rights legislation. One of the first blacks to attain a high position in the state's Democratic Party, Wheeler became the state party's treasurer in 1968, and then its financial director. Wheeler urged North Carolina's white financial advisors to steer the region toward the end of Jim Crow segregation for economic reasons. Straddling the line between confrontation and negotiation, Wheeler pushed for increased economic opportunity for African Americans while reminding the white South that its future was linked to the plight of black southerners"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Description based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on December 31, 2019). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Wheeler, John H.|q(John Hervey)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2008083031 610 10 United States.|bPresident's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n78066221|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 610 17 United States.|bPresident's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/527329 610 20 Democratic Party (N.C.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n94000226|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 610 27 Democratic Party (N.C.)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/693459 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 African American civil rights workers|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh91006121|zNorth Carolina|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79007042-781|vBiography. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Civil rights workers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85026385|zNorth Carolina|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79007042-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 African American bankers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85001801|zNorth Carolina|zDurham|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80002581-781|vBiography. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Bankers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85011595|zNorth Carolina|zDurham|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80002581-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 African Americans|xCivil rights|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85001935|zNorth Carolina|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79007042-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 African Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85001932|zNorth Carolina|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79007042-781|xEconomic conditions. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005736 650 7 African American civil rights workers.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/799093 650 7 Civil rights workers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 862721 650 7 African American bankers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/799038 650 7 Bankers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/826798 650 7 African Americans|xCivil rights.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/799575 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 African Americans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 799558 650 7 Economic conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919582 651 0 North Carolina|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh2008116390 651 7 North Carolina.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1204304 651 7 North Carolina|zDurham.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1207378 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Autobiographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026047 655 7 Autobiographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919894 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWinford, Brandon K.|tJohn Hervey Wheeler, Black Banking, and the Economic Struggle for Civil Rights. |dLexington : University Press of Kentucky, 2020 |z9780813178257|w(DLC) 2019037387|w(OCoLC)1118976750 830 0 Civil rights and the struggle for Black equality in the twentieth century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2005082164 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2144116|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
