Following the example of her grandfather, an ex -slave and community leader, Marian joined the NAACP at thirteen and grew up to achieve not only a number of civic leadership firsts in her adopted home city of Cincinnati, but a legacy of lasting civil rights victories. Of these, the best known is the desegregation of Cincinnati's Coney Island amusement park. She also fought to desegregate Cincinnati schools and to stop the introduction of observers in black voting precincts in Ohio. Her campaign to raise awareness of industrial toxic-waste practices in minority neighborhoods was later adapted into national Superfund legislation. In 2012, Marian's friend and colleague Dot Christenson sat down with her to record her memories. The resulting biography not only gives us the life story of remarkable leader but encapsulates many of the twentieth century's greatest struggles and advances. Spencer's story will prove inspirational and instructive to citizens and students alike. 546 English. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Spencer, Marian A.|q(Marian Alexander),|d1920-|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2015020986 600 17 Spencer, Marian A.|q(Marian Alexander),|d1920-|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1946527 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 African American civil rights workers|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh91006121|zOhio|zCincinnati|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79053745-781|vBiography. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Women civil rights workers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh88004934|zOhio|zCincinnati|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n79053745-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Civil rights workers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85026385|zOhio|zCincinnati|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79053745-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 African Americans|xCivil rights|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85001935|zOhio|zCincinnati|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79053745-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Civil rights movements|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85026384|zOhio|zCincinnati|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79053745-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 African American civil rights workers.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/799093 650 7 Women civil rights workers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1177410 650 7 Civil rights workers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 862721 650 7 African Americans|xCivil rights.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/799575 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Civil rights movements.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/862708 651 0 Cincinnati (Ohio)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79053745|xRace relations.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00007552 651 0 Cincinnati (Ohio)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79053745|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 651 7 Ohio|zCincinnati.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1205142 655 0 Electronic book. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Electronic books.|2lcgft 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aChristenson, Dorothy H., 1938-|tKeep on fighting|z9780821421710|w(DLC) 2015013623 |w(OCoLC)906447725 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1044813|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
