Gibson looks at how student-teacher relationships affect African American males. She studied students in two Bronx, New York, schools. African-American males may start optimistic, but they often come to perceive school as a poor option for achieving the "American dream." Instead, they may turn to crime, most often drug dealing and violence. Gibson's work shows how teachers affect this process. Teachers are most effective when they are "real": caring and willing to share of themselves as they pass on not only the subject matter of the class but also the social and cultural capital necessary to maximize their students chances at upward social mobility. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 African American teenage boys|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh90003731|xEducation (Secondary) |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99010264|zNew York (State)|zNew York|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79007751-781|vCase studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Teacher-student relationships|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85132960|zNew York (State)|zNew York|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79007751-781 |vCase studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99001484 650 0 African American juvenile delinquents.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh97006312 650 7 African American teenage boys.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/799391 650 7 Education, Secondary.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 903252 650 7 Teacher-student relationships.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1144236 650 7 African American juvenile delinquents.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/799212 651 7 New York (State)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1210280 651 7 New York (State)|zNew York.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1204333 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Case studies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423765 655 7 Case studies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2017026140 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGibson, Camille, 1971-|tBeing real.|dNew York : LFB Scholarly Pub., 2002|z1931202311|w(DLC) 2002005602|w(OCoLC)49566416 830 0 Criminal justice (LFB Scholarly Publishing LLC)|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2001094770 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=85978|zOnline eBook.
