That book presented the letters of the prominent Presbyterian minister and plantation patriarch Charles Colcock Jones (1804 - 1863), whose family owned more than one hundred slaves. While extensive, these letters can provide only one part of the story of the Jones family plantations in coastal Georgia. In this remarkable new book, the religious historian Erskine Clarke completes the story, offering a narrative history of four generations of the plantations' inhabitants, white and black. Encompassing the years 1805 to 1869, Dwelling Place: A Plantation Epic describes the simultaneous but vastly different experiences of slave and slave owner. This 'upstairs-downstairs' history reveals in detail how the benevolent impulses of Jones and his family became ideological supports for deep oppression, and how the slave Lizzy Jones and members of her family struggled against that oppression. Through letters, plantation and church records, court documents, slave narratives, archaeological findings and the memory of the African- American community, Clarke brings to light the long- suppressed history of the slaves of the Jones plantations - a history inseparably bound to that of their white owners. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Jones, Charles Colcock,|d1804-1863|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78090552|xFamily.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005743 600 10 Jones, Lizzy|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2005012231|xFamily.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00005743 600 14 Jones, Charles Colcock,|d1804-1863. 600 14 Jones, Lizzy. 600 17 Jones, Charles Colcock,|d1804-1863.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/28568 600 17 Jones, Lizzy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1605627 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800 - 1899|2fast 650 0 Plantation life|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85102824|zGeorgia|zLiberty County|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79113018-781|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Plantation owners|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85102825|zGeorgia|zLiberty County|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79113018-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 White people|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85146547|zGeorgia|zLiberty County|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79113018-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Enslaved persons|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123347|zGeorgia|zLiberty County|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79113018-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 African Americans|zGeorgia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh93004360|zLiberty County|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79113018-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 7 Families.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1728849 650 7 Plantation life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1065779 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Plantation owners.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1065786 650 7 White people.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1174816 650 7 Enslaved persons.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1120522 650 7 African Americans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 799558 651 0 Liberty County (Ga.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79113018|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 651 0 Liberty County (Ga.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79113018|xRace relations.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00007552 651 0 Liberty County (Ga.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79113018|xSocial life and customs|y19th century.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008859 651 4 Liberty County (Ga.) 651 7 Georgia|zLiberty County.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1206492 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aClarke, Erskine, 1941-|tDwelling place. |dNew Haven [Conn.] : Yale University Press, ©2005 |z0300108672|z9780300108675|w(DLC) 2005003958 |w(OCoLC)57694725 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=187999|zOnline eBook.
