Exiles, Entrepreneurs and Educators compares the political proclivities of two generations of African Americans who moved to Ghana. Author Steven J.L. Taylor blends archival and ethnographic research, including interviews, to provide a unique perspective on these immigrants who chose to leave an economically developed country and settled in an impoverished developing country. The first generation consisted of voluntary exiles from the US who arrived from 1957 to 1966, during the regime of President Kwame Nkrumah, embracing both Nkrumah and his left-leaning political party. In contrast to the first, many in the second generation left the US to establish commercial enterprises in Ghana. Although they identified with the Democratic Party while living in the US, and were politically active, this second generation has for the most part avoided political activity in Ghana while identifying with the Ghanaian party that is modeled after the Republican Party in the US. Taylor helps to dispel some of the incorrect assumptions about African politics and provides readers with an insightful look at how developing nations can embark upon a path toward democratization.--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 African Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85001932|zGhana|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061117-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 African Americans|xRelations with Africans.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85001975 650 0 African Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85001932|xPolitical activity|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002011434|zGhana.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80061117-781 650 0 African American businesspeople|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85002007|zGhana.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80061117-781 650 7 African Americans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 799558 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 African Americans|xRelations with Africans.|2fast|0https:/ /id.worldcat.org/fast/799670 650 7 Political participation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1069386 650 7 African American businesspeople.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/799064 651 7 Ghana.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208741 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aTaylor, Steven J.L., 1958-|tExiles, entrepreneurs, and educators.|dAlbany : State University of New York Press, 2019|z9781438474717|w(DLC) 2018033274 |w(OCoLC)1045645822 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2024081|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
