To recognize self-censoring strategies in writing, it is necessary to know the specific restrictions of the censorship regime in question. In South Africa under apartheid all writers were confronted with the question of how to respond to the pressure of censorship. This confrontation took a different form however, depending on what group the writer belonged to and what language he/she used. By looking at white writers writing in Afrikaans and white and black writers writing in English, this book gives the impact of censorship on South African literature a comparative examination which it has not received before. The book considers works by J.M. Coetzee, Nadine Gordimer, Andre Brink, and others less known to readers outside South Africa like Karel Schoeman, Louis Kruger, Christopher Hope, Miriam Tlali and Mtutuzeli Matshoba. It treats the censorship laws of the apartheid regime as well as, in the final chapter, the new law of the Mandela government which shows some surprising similarities to its predecessor. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 650 0 Comparative literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85077534 650 0 South African literature (English)|xBlack authors|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85125507|xHistory and criticism.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99001187 650 0 South African literature (English)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125506|xWhite authors|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006562|xHistory and criticism.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99001187 650 0 Afrikaans literature|xHistory and criticism.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007100774 650 0 Comparative literature|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85077534|xEnglish and Afrikaans. 650 0 Comparative literature|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85077534|xAfrikaans and English. 650 0 Censorship|zSouth Africa.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2009118634 650 7 Comparative literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1734553 650 7 South African literature (English)|xBlack authors.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1127198 650 7 South African literature (English)|xWhite authors.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1426663 650 7 South African literature (English)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1127197 650 7 Afrikaans literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 800002 650 7 Censorship.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/850568 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 650 7 Censorship.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0000245 651 0 South Africa|xPolitics and government|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85125489 651 4 Sudáfrica|xPolítica y gobierno|ySiglo XX. 651 7 South Africa.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204616 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aLange, Margreet de.|tMuzzled muse. |dAmsterdam [The Netherlands] ; Philadelphia : John Benjamins Pub.
