Focusing solely on cost, the author examined the U.S. historical use of air-to-ground attack during and since the Vietnam War, looking, among other things, at the length of each conflict and the weapons expended. Only if the United States is confident that all possible conflicts over the system lifetime can be ended in a total of less than about ten days is exclusive reliance on expendable assets prudent. Expendable weapons do have some important operational advantages, but if the United States wishes to maintain the capability to wage air war efficiently for more than a few days, reusable platforms are an important part of an efficient force mix. 536 The research described in this report was sponsored by the United States Air Force under Contract FA7014-06-C-0001. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF title screen (viewed on Oct. 7, 2012). 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 650 0 Air warfare|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85002719|xEconomic aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005484|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Air-to-surface missiles|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85002703|xCost effectiveness.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99004945 650 0 Bombing, Aerial|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85015470|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n78095330-781 650 0 Precision guided munitions|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85106233|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Bombardment.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85015464 650 7 Air warfare.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/802704 650 7 Air-to-surface missiles.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/802757 650 7 Cost effectiveness.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 880707 650 7 Bombing, Aerial.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 835808 650 7 Precision guided munitions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1074973 650 7 Armed Forces.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/814586 650 7 Weapons systems.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1173046 650 7 Bombardment.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/835777 651 0 United States|xArmed Forces|xWeapons systems|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85139905|xCost effectiveness.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99004945 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Technical reports.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2015026093 655 7 Technical reports.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1941336 710 2 Project Air Force (U.S.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n85368122 710 2 Rand Corporation.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n78083407 776 08 |iPrint version:|z9780833074553 776 08 |iPrint version:|z0833074555 830 0 Technical report (Rand Corporation) ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n2005069635|vTR1230. 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.7249/j.ctt5hhvxs|zOnline eBook.
