Informal learning principles, outlined by Lucy Green (2008), provide one way of supplying students with a musically engaging learning experience. This study sought to discover the extent to which eighth grade saxophone students, continuing to study in a formal instrumental instruction situation, were able to embrace informal instructional practices. Additionally, the study explored the efficacy of benchmarks in informal learning settings. Three themes emerged throughout this study: a) students' discomfort in abandoning formal learning, b) students' self-perception as it correlates to learning and music, and c) student and teacher discomfort with the change in the teacher's traditional role. In conclusion I suggest that students and teachers entrenched in formal music learning situations struggle with the limitations of the formal process, making it difficult to fully embrace informal learning. I also propose that benchmarks, while an appropriate means of assessment, did not take into consideration the learning needs and potentials for each individual student and placed a formal objective on an informal learning process. 590 Master's Theses--School of Education. 650 0 School music|xInstruction and study.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh91005691 650 0 Music|xInstruction and study.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85088796 650 0 Alternative education|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh96003572|vCase studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Education|xAims and objectives.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85040992 650 0 Saxophone|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85117829|xInstruction and study.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99014466 650 0 Band music|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85011470|xInstruction and study.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99014466 650 7 School music|xInstruction and study.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1107642 650 7 Music|xInstruction and study.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1030347 650 7 Alternative education.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /806145 650 7 Education|xAims and objectives.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/902507 650 7 Saxophone|xInstruction and study.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1106180 650 7 Saxophone.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1106177 650 7 Band music|xInstruction and study.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/826439 650 7 Band music.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/826435 655 7 Case studies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423765 655 7 Band music.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1726530 655 7 Academic theses.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026039 655 7 Academic theses.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1726453 655 7 Case studies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2017026140 710 2 Rider University.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n95086876 710 2 Rider University.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n95086876|bSchool of Education. 901 MARCIVE 20231220 910 Westminster Choir College master's thesis 935 479045 948 |d20100208|cMH|tlcsh ccedit 520 500 enrich|lridm|v1 994 C0|bRID
