Eurocentric studies of the conquest of the Americas present colonization as a civilizing force for good, and the native populations as primitive or worse. Colonization is seen as a mutually beneficial process, in which civilization? was brought to the natives who in return shared their land and cultures. The opposing historical camp views colonization as a form of genocide in which the native populations were passive victims overwhelmed by European military power. In this fresh examination, an activist and historian of native descent argues that the colonial powers met resistance from the indigenous inhabitants and that these confrontations shaped the forms and extent of colonialism. This account encompasses North and South America, the development of nation-states, and the resurgence of indigenous resistance in the post-World War II era. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Indigenous peoples|zAmerica|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2020008730|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Insurgency|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85067073|zAmerica|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85004220-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Indigenous peoples|zAmerica|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2020008730|xGovernment relations. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005270 650 7 Indigenous peoples.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 970213 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Insurgency.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/975461 650 7 Colonization.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/868483 651 0 America|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85004220|xColonization|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005562|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 0 America|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85004263 651 7 America.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1239786 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Electronic books.|2local 776 08 |iPrint version:|aHill, Gord.|t500 years of indigenous resistance.|dOakland, Calif. : PM, 2009|z9781604861068 |w(OCoLC)319501356 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=299422|zOnline eBook.
