Pickens shows how Black speculative and science fiction authors such as Octavia Butler, Nalo Hopkinson, and Tananarive Due craft new worlds that reimagine the intersection of Blackness and madness. These creative writer-theorists formulate new parameters for thinking through Blackness and madness. Pickens considers Butler's 'Fledgling' as an archive of Black madness that demonstrates how race and ability shape subjectivity while constructing the building blocks for antiracist and anti- ableist futures. She examines how Hopkinson's 'Midnight Robber' theorizes mad Blackness and how Due's 'African Immortals' series contest dominant definitions of the human. The theorizations of race and disability that emerge from these works, Pickens demonstrates, challenge the paradigms of subjectivity that white supremacy and ableism enforce, thereby pointing to the potential for new forms of radical politics. 588 Description based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on April 20, 2020). 650 0 Minority people with disabilities|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh94000724|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 African Americans with disabilities|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh88004334|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 People with disabilities|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh86006527 650 0 Discrimination against people with disabilities|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2009123487 650 0 American fiction|xAfrican American authors|xHistory and criticism.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2007100756 650 0 Science fiction, American|xHistory and criticism.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008111190 650 0 Race in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh94008443 650 0 People with disabilities in literature.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh94007843 650 0 African Americans|xStudy and teaching.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh85001992 650 0 Disability studies|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh97005575|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 7 Minority people with disabilities.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1023375 650 7 African Americans with disabilities.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/799745 650 7 People with disabilities.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1057245 650 7 Discrimination against people with disabilities.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/895020 650 7 American fiction|xAfrican American authors.|2fast|0https:/ /id.worldcat.org/fast/807049 650 7 Science fiction, American.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1108635 650 7 Race in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1086506 650 7 People with disabilities in literature.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1057365 650 7 African Americans|xStudy and teaching.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/799707 650 7 Disability studies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 894656 650 7 LITERARY CRITICISM / American / African American.|2bisacsh 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 0 Electronic books. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 776 08 |iPrint version:|aPickens, Therí A.|tBlack madness : : mad Blackness.|dDurham : Duke University Press, 2019 |z9781478003748|w(DLC) 2018040998|w(OCoLC)1077585793 856 40 |zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
