Here are the stories of John Lewis Burckhardt, William Francis Lynch, James T. Barclay, Selah Merrill, and other explorers of Bible lands from the mid- to late-nineteenth century. Most of these men did not engage in archaeology as we commonly define it today, but their contributions set the stage for modern archaeology. They were not excavators, but students of geography, nature, languages, customs, traditions, and the Bible--all of which are vital to a more refined understanding of the Bible. As they traversed Palestine, these explorers encountered inscriptions and even previously unidentified languages (e.g., Hittite). Lewis's accounts reveal their interests, almost presciently, in the categories of anthropology as currently defined--cultural anthropology, physical anthropology, linguistics, and archaeology. These pursuits laid the groundwork for the more comprehensive and interdisciplinary studies that have eventually become the trademark of both biblical studies and the archaeology of the biblical world. As Lewis shows, we owe explorers a great debt of gratitude for their pioneering work. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 630 00 Bible|xAntiquities.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85013580 630 7 Bible.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1356024 630 07 Bible.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1356024 650 0 Explorers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85046461|zPalestine|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85097163-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Archaeologists|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85006505|zPalestine|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85097163-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Excavations (Archaeology)|zPalestine|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008103400|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Antiquities.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/810745 650 7 Explorers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/918556 650 7 Archaeologists.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/812929 650 7 Excavations (Archaeology)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/917564 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 651 0 Palestine|xAntiquities.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85097164 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aLewis, Jack Pearl, 1919-|tEarly explorers of Bible lands|z9780891124511|w(DLC) 2012047462 |w(OCoLC)818143955 830 0 Early explorers of Bible lands. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=784227|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
