In recent years South Korea, which long stood in the shadow of the superpowers Japan and China, has surged in economic terms. That said, industrialization and the population explosion connected with it have created enormous challenges for the country at the interface between globalization and cultural identity. Some 10.5 million inhabitants live in the center of the capital Seoul, while the metropolitan area includes around 25 million residents making it the second largest conurbation in the world after Tokyo. The result is high urban density, which spells an enormous demand for the more efficient use of space and encourages verticalization in architecture. The publication outlines the current developments in South Korean architecture, urban development and landscape architecture by examining 32 projects in detail. An in- depth view of contemporary South Korean architecture is given by five essays that address topics such as the fusion of tradition and the modern, the re-defining of so- called "social spaces" and the country's special topographical situation. The authors are both architects, trained at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 21st century|2fast 648 7 2000 - 2099|2fast 650 0 Architecture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85006611|zKorea (South)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79126802-781|y21st century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012478 650 0 City planning|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85026282|zKorea (South)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79126802-781 650 0 Architects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85006565|zKorea (South)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79126802-781 650 7 Architecture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/813346 650 7 City planning.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/862177 650 7 Architects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/813114 651 7 Korea (South)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1206791 655 4 Electronic books. 700 1 Hong, John.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2017013571 776 08 |iPrint version:|aPark, Jinhee.|tConvergent flux |z9783034608060|w(OCoLC)769429662 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=525701|zOnline eBook.
