Those residing in communities in regional and remote Australia are further disadvantaged because of the limited formal economic opportunities there. In these areas mining developments may be the major--and sometimes the only--contributors to regional economic development. However Indigenous communities have gained only relatively limited long-term economic development benefits from mining activity on land that they own or over which they have property rights of varying significance. Furthermore, while Indigenous people may place high value on realising particular non-economic benefits from mining agreements, there may be only limited capacity to deliver such benefits. This collection of papers focuses on three large, ongoing mining operations in Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory under two statutory regimes--the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 and the Native Title Act 1993. The authors outline the institutional basis to greater industry involvement while describing and analysing the best practice principles that can be utilised both by companies and Indigenous community organisations"--Publisher's description. 546 English. 588 0 Print version record. 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 650 0 Aboriginal Australians|xEconomic conditions.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85009607 650 0 Aboriginal Australians|xSocial conditions.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85009625 650 0 Mineral industries|zAustralia.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010101891 650 0 Mineral industries|xEnvironmental aspects|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85085556|zAustralia. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79021326-781 650 0 Mineral industries|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85085548|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00002758|zAustralia.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79021326-781 650 7 Aboriginal Australians|xEconomic conditions.|2fast|0https: //id.worldcat.org/fast/794509 650 7 Aboriginal Australians|xSocial conditions.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/794561 650 7 Mineral industries.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1022218 650 7 Mineral industries|xEnvironmental aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1022250 650 7 Mineral industries|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1022315 651 7 Australia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204543 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 700 1 Altman, Jon C.,|d1954-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n78046998 700 1 Martin, David|q(David Fernandes)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/nr2001044592 710 2 Australian National University.|bCentre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no93021983 776 08 |iPrint version:|tPower, culture, economy.|dActon, A.C.T. : ANU E Press, ©2009|z9781921536861|w(OCoLC)369165241 830 0 Research monograph (Australian National University.
