Japanese-North Korean relations, 2004-06 : debates about unilateral sanctions -- 6. Conclusion. 520 In 1998 and in 2006, North Korea conducted ballistic missile tests that landed dangerously close to Japan. In the first case, the North Korean tests provoked only Japanese alarm and severely constrained action. In the second, the tests led to unilateral economic sanctions - the first time since the end of the Second World War that Japan has used coercion against a neighboring state. What explains this dramatic shift in policy choice? Seung Hyok Lee argues that the 2006 sanctions were not a strategic response to the missile tests, but a reflection of changing public attitudes towards North Korea - the result of the shocking revelation that the North Koreans had abducted at least seventeen Japanese citizens in the 1970s and 80s and secretly held them prisoner for decades. Japanese Society and the Politics of the North Korean Threat is the first book on this development in English and a valuable case study of public opinion's increasing influence on Japanese security policy. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 National security|zJapan.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008108219 650 0 Economic sanctions|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85040838|zKorea (North)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81074720-781 650 0 Ballistic missiles|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85011308|zKorea (North)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81074720-781|xTesting.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005648 650 0 Kidnapping victims|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00009340|zKorea (North)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81074720-781|xPublic opinion.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006218 650 0 Kidnapping|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85072244|zJapan|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n78089021-781|xPublic opinion.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006218 650 0 Public opinion|zJapan.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008110221 650 7 International relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/977053 650 7 National security.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1033711 650 7 Economic sanctions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 902060 650 7 Ballistic missiles.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 826097 650 7 Kidnapping.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/987322 650 7 Testing.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1148240 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xGovernment|xInternational.|2bisacsh 650 7 Kidnapping victims.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 987328 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xInternational Relations|xGeneral. |2bisacsh 650 7 Public opinion.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1082785 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xInternational Relations|xDiplomacy. |2bisacsh 650 7 Ballistic missiles|xTesting.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/826106 650 7 Diplomatic relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1907412 651 0 Japan|xForeign relations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85069417|zKorea (North)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81074720-781 651 0 Korea (North)|xForeign relations|zJapan.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2009128115 651 7 Japan.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204082 651 7 Korea (North)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1214151 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aLee, Seung Hyok.|tJapanese society and the politics of the North Korean threat|z9781442630345 |w(OCoLC)925399306 830 0 Japan and global society.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no2011154025 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1166337|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
