Using a life-cycle model for Roman soldiers, the author interprets the large quantity of 1st-century finds as personal memorabilia brought home by ex-soldiers as a reminder of their 25 years of service, symbolising their newly-acquired veteran status. Underpinning the research is an extensive inventory of militaria from urban centres, rural settlements, cult places, rivers and graves, presented in 96 plates. The study not only presents a considerable body of unpublished data, but also offers an intriguing perspective on daily life in the northern frontier of the Roman Empire, with its closely interwoven military and civilian values. 546 En. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 650 0 Horses|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85062160 |zNetherlands|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n78085423-781|xEquipment and supplies.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh00005850 650 0 Batavi (Germanic people)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85012316 650 7 Horses.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/960603 650 7 Equipment and supplies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1352983 650 7 Batavi (Germanic people)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/828680 650 7 Classical antiquities.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /863445 651 0 Netherlands|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n78085423|xAntiquities, Roman.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99002361 651 0 Rhine-Meuse Delta (Netherlands)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85113659|xAntiquities, Roman. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99002361 651 7 Netherlands.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204034 653 Archaeology|aBatavians 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aNicolay, Johan.|tArmed Batavians. |dAmsterdam : Amsterdam University Press, ©2007|w(DLC) 2008423566 830 0 Amsterdam archaeological studies ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n97049046|v11. 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt46n2g3|zOnline ebook.
