Over the past 40 years the National Research Services Award (NRSA) Program has played a large role in training the workforce responsible for dramatic advances in the understanding of various diseases and new insights that have led to more effective and targeted therapies. In spite of this program, the difficulty obtaining jobs after the postdoc period has discouraged many domestic students from pursuing graduate postdoc training. In the United States, more than 50 percent of the postdoc workforce is made up of individuals who obtained their Ph. D.s from other countries. Indeed, one can make a strong argument that the influx of highly trained and creative foreigners has contributed greatly to U.S. science over the past 70 years. Research Training in the Biomedical, Behavioral, and Clinical Research Sciences discusses a number of important issues, including: the job prospects for postdocs completing their training; questions about the continued supply of international postdocs in an increasingly competitive world; the need for equal, excellent training for all graduate students who receive NIH funding; and the need to increase the diversity of trainees. The book recommends improvements in minority recruiting, more rigorous and extensive training in the responsible conduct of research and ethics, increased emphasis on career development, more attention to outcomes, and the requirement for incorporating more quantitative thinking in the biomedical curriculum."-- Publisher's description. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Medical research personnel|xSupply and demand|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85083021|zUnited States. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Medical research personnel|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85083020|xEducation|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005758|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Social sciences|xResearch|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010113653 650 0 Social scientists|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85124033|xSupply and demand|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005605|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Social scientists|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85124033|xEducation|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005758|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Behavioral scientists|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh94002378|xSupply and demand|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh00005605|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Behavioral scientists|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh94002378|xEducation|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005758|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 2 Workforce.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D000078329 650 7 Medical research personnel|xSupply and demand.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1014597 650 7 Medical research personnel.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1014594 650 7 Education.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/902499 650 7 Social sciences|xResearch.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1122944 650 7 Social scientists|xSupply and demand.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1123071 650 7 Social scientists.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1123063 650 7 Behavioral scientists.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /829951 650 7 Supply and demand.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1139115 650 12 Biomedical Research|xeducation.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/ mesh/D035843Q000193 650 12 Biomedical Research.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D035843 650 12 Research Personnel|xtrends.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/ D012108Q000639 651 2 United States.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D014481 650 22 Behavioral Research|xeducation.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/ mesh/D035841Q000193 650 22 Behavioral Research.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D035841 650 22 Social Sciences|xeducation.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/ D012942Q000193 650 22 Social Sciences.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D012942 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 710 2 National Research Council (U.S.).|bBoard on Higher Education and Workforce.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no2004075601 776 08 |iPrint version:|aNational Research Council (U.S.).
