Author Timothy J. Wengert builds his case largely on the basis of Melanchthon's Scholia on the Epistle of Paul to the Colossians, employing the critically important but seldom used second edition of 1528, which was produced in the aftermath of Luther and Erasmus's famous debate over the freedom of the will. Wengert also draws on a wide range of other contemporary sources, many of them well known but, as he argues, frequently misunderstood. Throughout this analysis he subjects a wide range of the secondary literature to sharp critical review. The book deals with a number of important topics: the complicated and elusive relationships between humanism and the Reformation, Erasmus and Luther, Erasmus and Melanchthon, and Melanchthon and Luther; the theological issues of proper biblical interpretation, of free will, and of divine and human righteousness; and the hotly contested social problem of political order. Human Freedom, Christian Righteousness will be of interest not only to students and scholars of Reformation theology, but to a broader audience of those concerned with Renaissance and Reformation history and literature."--Jacket. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Melanchthon, Philip,|d1497-1560.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79121330 600 10 Erasmus, Desiderius,|d-1536.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79055814 600 17 Melanchthon, Philip,|d1497-1560.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/44438 600 17 Melanchthon, Philipp,|d1497-1560.|2cct 600 17 Erasmus, Desiderius,|d-1536.|2cct 600 17 Erasmus, Desiderius,|d-1536.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1817492 630 00 Bible.|pColossians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79122746|xCriticism, interpretation, etc.|xHistory|y16th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005389 630 04 Bible.|pNew Testament.|kColossians|xCriticism, interpretation, etc.|xHistory|y16th century. 630 7 Bible.|pColossians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1892890 630 07 Bible.|pColossians|xCriticism, interpretation, etc. |xHistory|y16th century.|2cct 630 07 Bible.|pColossians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1892890 648 7 16th century|2fast 648 7 1500-1599|2fast 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWengert, Timothy J.|tHuman freedom, Christian righteousness.|dNew York : Oxford University Press, 1998|z0195115295|w(DLC) 97010340|w(OCoLC)36589159 830 0 Oxford studies in historical theology.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n96016692 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=23523|zOnline eBook.
