At pride marches, in films such as Go Fish, at academic conferences, the role and status of bisexuals is hotly contested. Within lesbian communities, formed to support lesbians in a patriarchal and heterosexist society, bisexual women are often perceived as a threat or as a political weakness. Bisexual women feel that they are regarded with suspicion and distrust, if not openly scorned. Drawing on her research with over 400 bisexual and lesbian women, surveying the treatment of bisexuality in the lesbian and gay press, and examining the recent growth of a self-consciously political bisexual movement, Paula Rust addresses a range of questions pertaining to the political and social relationships between lesbians and bisexual women. By tracing the roots of the controversy over bisexuality among lesbians back to the early lesbian feminist debates of the 1970s, Rust argues that those debates created the circumstances in which bisexuality became an inevitable challenge to lesbian politics. She also traces it forward, predicting the future of sexual politics. 588 0 Print version record. 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 650 0 Lesbians|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh88002183|xAttitudes.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006216 650 0 Lesbians|zUnited States|xIdentity.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2009129548 650 0 Lesbians|zUnited States|xPsychology.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2009129543 650 0 Bisexual women|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010012311|xAttitudes.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006216 650 0 Bisexual women|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010012311|xPsychology.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002011487 650 0 Bisexuality|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85014412|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Lesbianism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85076157|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Sexual behavior surveys|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010112799 650 7 Lesbians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/996540 650 7 Identity (Philosophical concept)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/966889 650 7 Psychology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1081447 650 7 Bisexual women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/833338 650 7 Bisexuality|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/833349 650 7 Bisexuality.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/833344 650 7 Lesbianism|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/996527 650 7 Lesbianism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/996514 650 7 Sexual behavior surveys.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1114807 650 7 Lesbians.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0000556 650 7 Bisexual women.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0000202 650 7 Bisexuality.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0000204 650 7 Lesbianism.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0000799 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aRust, Paula C.|tBisexuality and the Challenge to Lesbian Politics : Sex, Loyalty, and Revolution.|dNew York : NYU Press, ©1995|z9780814774441 830 0 Cutting Edge: Lesbian Life and Literature Series. 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt9qg5tm|zOnline eBook.
