After her death from tuberculosis at age twenty- three, the missionary organization that had educated and later employed Brown commissioned a posthumous biography, Memoir of Catharine Brown, which enjoyed widespread contemporary popularity and praise. In the following decade, her writings, along with those of other educated Cherokees, became highly politicized and were used in debates about the removal of the Cherokees and other tribes to Indian Territory. Although she was once viewed by literary critics as a docile and dominated victim of missionaries who represented the tragic fate of Indians who abandoned their identities, Brown is now being reconsidered as a figure of enduring Cherokee revitalization, survival, adaptability, and leadership. In Cherokee Sister Theresa Strouth Gaul collects all of Brown's writings, consisting of letters and a diary, some appearing in print for the first time, as well as Brown's biography and a drama and poems about her. This edition of Brown's collected works and related materials firmly establishes her place in early nineteenth-century culture and her influence on American perceptions of Native Americans."--|cProvided by publisher. 520 "A collection of writings by and about Catharine Brown, the first Cherokee to convert to Christianity who wrote extensively about her conversion and faith"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Brown, Catharine,|d1800?-1823|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n83041887|vDiaries.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001602 600 10 Brown, Catharine,|d1800?-1823|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n83041887|vCorrespondence.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001488 600 11 Brown, Catharine,|d1800?-1823|vCorrespondence. 600 11 Brown, Catharine,|d1800?-1823|vDiaries. 600 17 Brown, Catharine,|d1800?-1823.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/110581 610 20 Brainerd Mission|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n98031482|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 610 27 Brainerd Mission.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 736976 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1899|2fast 650 0 Cherokee women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh93007798|zTennessee|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79060965-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Cherokee Indians|xMissions|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh2009118880|zTennessee|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79060965-781|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Cherokee women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/853734 650 7 Cherokee Indians|xMissions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/853688 650 7 LITERARY COLLECTIONS|xAmerican|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xEthnic Studies|xNative American Studies. |2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|zUnited States|x19th Century.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|zUnited States|xState & Local|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|zUnited States|y19th Century.|2bisacsh 651 7 Tennessee.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205353 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Diaries.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423794 655 7 Correspondence.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 2003288 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Personal correspondence.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919948 655 7 Diaries.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms /gf2014026085 655 7 Personal correspondence.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/genreForms/gf2014026141 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 700 1 Gaul, Theresa Strouth,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n2004046348|eeditor,|ewriter of introduction. 776 08 |iPrint version:Brown, Catharine, 1800?-1823.|tCherokee sister.|dLincoln : University of Nebraska Press, [2014] |z9780803240759|w(DLC) 2013027957|w(OCoLC)839395946 830 0 Legacies of nineteenth-century American women writers. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2004040219 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=661804|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
