Summary Program #857: "The Story of an Atomic Town: In the 1950's two communities grew on Long Island. Small towns like Shirley committed to a blue-collar suburban ideal; and the Brook haven National Laboratory dedicated to pure nuclear research. The two did not mix well. In time residents of Shirley had illness and death rates well above normal. The arrogant refusal of the Laboratory to investigate matters further riled passions. In the end the downfall of a small town signaled the poor state of communication about nuclear issues in small communities. Kelly McMasters author of "The Story of an Atomic Town" describes what happened."--Track Sheet.
Program #858: "An American Mind. From his birth in 1858 to his death in 1919 the United States was engaged in an accelerated process of maturation. Settling its vast interior, welcoming hordes of new immigrants and rapidly urbanizing; the country was preparing for a 20th Century role as a world power. Theodore Roosevelt's own maturation paralleled his country's. He raised his commitment to a muscular Christianity and belief in righteousness to the level of a political philosophy. Eventually, his vision of the state as moral arbiter for the people became the theme of his progressivism. Joshua Hawley explains the strengths and flows of Roosevelt's vision."--Track Sheet.
Commentary #321: "Why Ethics Should Matter to Congress. Polling shows that Americans care a great deal about the honesty of their representatives in Congress. Yet Congress allowed its ethics system to break down, and is only now starting to rebuild it. Former Congressman Lee Hamilton explains "Why Ethics Should Matter to Congress."--Track Sheet
Commentary #322: "Russia and Georgia. The debate over who started the war between Georgia and Russia continues, but there is no doubt that Russia finished it. Former Congressman Lee Hamilton discusses the consequences of the peace."--Track Sheet.
