The wide-spread mining of gold looks at first glance to be a blessing for a desperately poor and largely pastoralist country. Volatility and uncertainty as well as political and economic turmoil led many people to join the hopeful search for gold. This activity poses an intense moral problem; in the 'land of dust,' disturbing the ground and extracting the precious metal is widely believed to have calamitous consequences. With gold retaining strong ties to the landscape and its many spirit beings, the fortune of the preciouss metal is inseparable from the fears that surround mining. This work considers the results of several years of fieldwork in Mongolia, time spent with the 'ninjas,' as the miners are known locally, as well as the people who disapprove of their illegal activities. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on June 07, 2017). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Gold mines and mining|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85055733|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00002758|zMongolia|zUi͡anga Sum. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2016164389-781 650 0 Economic development|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85040809|zMongolia|zUi͡anga Sum. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2016164389-781 650 0 Gold|xReligious aspects|xBuddhism.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2019003886 650 0 Ethnology|zMongolia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85045334|zUi͡anga Sum.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2016164389-781 650 7 Gold mines and mining|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/944493 650 7 Gold mines and mining.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /944469 650 7 Economic development|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/901865 650 7 Gold|xReligious aspects|xBuddhism.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/2006657 650 7 Ethnology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/916106 651 7 Mongolia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208752 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aHigh, Mette M.|tFear and fortune. |dIthaca : Cornell University Press, 2017|z9781501707544 |w(DLC) 2016047307 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1517548|zOnline eBook.
