Canadian history! Explorations -- A New History of Canada? Images of Canada -- Television History and the Star Journalist: The National Dream -- Behind the History Wars at the CBC: The Valour and the Horror -- One Big Story: Canada: A People's History. 520 "This book explores Canadian history documentary and docudrama programming on CBC television since its beginnings in 1952. During this fifty-year period, television was a uniquely powerful medium --at once intimate and widely shared, reaching millions of people. CBC was the only Canadian broadcaster to consistently show history programming and has played a unique role in shaping Canadians' perceptions of their history. Analyzing the major works of Canadian history on CBC television over fifty years -- Explorations (1956-63), Images of Canada (1972-76), The National Dream (1974), The Valour and the Horror (1992), and Canada: A People's History (2000-02) -- reveals patterns and developments in content and presentation. As the author argues, these developments were not arbitrary but were impelled by a wide range of external factors: developments in broadcasting policy and regulation in Canada; television industry developments, including competition from a growing American market and for new Canadian broadcasters (such as CTV and Global) for viewers and for advertising revenue; the evolution of television itself, including the standards and financing of production and attention to ratings, technological change, and job creation; and the evolution of journalism and the role of journalists as supposed authorities. This book is both a critique of public history and a political economy of television production. The author has three major findings."--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on June 10, 2019). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 20 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.|bEnglish Television Network|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n85158736 |xInfluence.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002005444 610 27 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.|bEnglish Television Network.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/615900 650 0 Television|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85133456|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zCanada.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79007233-781 650 0 History on television.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2010000595 650 0 Television and history|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85133488|zCanada.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79007233-781 650 0 Television broadcasting policy|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85133522|zCanada|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79007233-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Historical television programs|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85061209|zCanada|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79007233-781|xHistory and criticism.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99001187 650 0 Documentary television programs|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85038729|zCanada|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79007233-781|xHistory and criticism.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99001187 650 7 Television|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1146618 650 7 Television.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1146535 650 7 History on television.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1749971 650 7 Television and history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1146686 650 7 Television broadcasting policy.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1146821 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Historical television programs.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/958214 650 7 Documentary television programs.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/896100 651 7 Canada.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204310 653 Canada 653 Documentary television programs 653 Historical television programs 653 History 653 History and criticism 653 History on television 653 Influence (Literary, artistic, etc.) 653 Social aspects 653 Television 653 Television and history 653 Television broadcasting policy 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:MacDonald, Monica, 1965-|tRecasting history.|dMontreal ; Kingston ; London ; Chicago : McGill- Queen's University Press, 2019|z077355632X|z9780773556317 |w(OCoLC)1045738675 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2127181|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
