Created by a colonial merchant, planter, and diplomat named Augustine Herrman, the map pictures the Mid-Atlantic in breathtaking detail, capturing its waterways, coastlines, and communities. Herrman spent three decades travelling between Dutch New Amsterdam and the English Chesapeake before eventually settling in Maryland and making this map. Although the map has been reproduced widely, the history of how it became one of the most famous images of the Chesapeake has never been told. A Biography of a Map in Motion uncovers the intertwined stories of the map and its maker, offering new insights into the creation of empire in North America. The book follows the map from the waterways of the Chesapeake to the workshops of London, where it was turned into a print and sold. Transported into coffee houses, private rooms, and government offices, Virginia and Maryland became an apparatus of empire that allowed English elites to imaginatively possess and accurately manage their Atlantic colonies. Investigating this map offers the rare opportunity to recapture the complementary and occasionally conflicting forces that created the British Empire. From the colonial and the metropolitan to the economic and the political to the local and the Atlantic, this is a fascinating exploration of the many meanings of a map, and how what some saw as establishing a sense of local place could translate to forging an empire. 588 Description based on print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Herrman, Augustine,|d1621 or 1622-1686.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n85015855 600 10 Herrman, Augustine,|d1621 or 1622-1686.|tVirginia and Maryland as it is planted and inhabited this present year 1670. 600 17 Herrman, Augustine,|d1621 or 1622-1686.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/148076 648 7 Early works to 1800|2fast 648 7 1600-1775|2fast 650 0 Cartography|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85020515|zMaryland|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79029831-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Cartographers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85020514|zMaryland|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79029831-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh99001237 650 7 Cartography.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/848025 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Cartographers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/848021 651 0 Virginia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79022909 |vMaps|vEarly works to 1800.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001730 651 0 Maryland|vMaps|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008115827|vEarly works to 1800.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001366 651 0 Chesapeake Bay Region (Md. and Va.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85023112|vMaps|vEarly works to 1800.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001730 651 0 Maryland|xHistory|yColonial period, ca. 1600-1775.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85081755 651 7 Virginia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204597 651 7 Maryland.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204739 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Maps.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423704 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Early works.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411636 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Maps.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/ gf2011026387 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 710 2 Project Muse.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n96089174 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKoot, Christian J.|tBiography of a map in motion.|dNew York : New York University Press, 2018 |z1479837296|z9781479837298|w(OCoLC)982607610 830 0 Book collections on Project MUSE. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1497326|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
