Much can be learned about a culture by examining its treatment of women and children. More importantly, reproduction encompasses both a moral and a social imperative; the continuation of a society rests on childbirth. In imperial China, securing the continuation of the family line was the utmost filial act, with the family as the basic organizing unit of society and the state. Yi-li Wu noted that "childbirth was the warp on which the fabric of society was woven" in imperial China. I argue that childbirth remains so, and alterations in how childbirth is viewed and conducted merely point to larger ideological visions of social and political structures. Li Xiaojiang asserted in the preface to her anthropological study of modernization and traditional childbirth customs in rural China in the 1990s that "because of its close relationship with levels of health and disease, birth is one of the keys to understanding and constructing women's lives, but our field of vision has been blind to it." Opening one's eyes to the rich material surrounding childbirth, the researcher is made aware that legislation regarding reproduction and birth, maternal and child health, and the general treatment of women and children illuminate the relative value or disregard a people carry for those women and children."--Publisher's description. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Childbirth|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85023401|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79091151-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Maternal and infant welfare|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85082098|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n79091151-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Maternal health services|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85082102|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n79091151-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Motherhood|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85087522|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79091151-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 Childbirth.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/854780 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Maternal and infant welfare.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1011977 650 7 Maternal health services.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1011995 650 7 Motherhood.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1026907 650 7 Motherhood.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0001001 651 7 China.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1206073 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aJohnson, Tina Phillips, 1968- |tChildbirth in republican China.|dLanham, Md. : Lexington Books, ©2011|z9780739164402|w(DLC) 2011013291 |w(OCoLC)707966825 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=383903|zOnline eBook.
