Decreasing birth rates had largely slowed French population growth, and the country's population was not keeping pace with that of its European neighbors. To regain its standing in the European world, France set its sights on building a vast colonial empire while simultaneously developing a policy of pronatalism to reverse these demographic trends. Though representing distinct political movements, colonial supporters and pronatalist organizations were born of the same crisis and reflected similar anxieties concerning France's trajectory and position in the world. Regeneration through Empire explores the intersection between colonial lobbyists and pronatalists in France's Third Republic. Margaret Cook Andersen argues that as the pronatalist movement became more organized at the end of the nineteenth century, pronatalists increasingly understood their demographic crisis in terms that transcended the boundaries of the metropole and began to position the French empire, specifically its colonial holdings in North Africa and Madagascar, as a key component in the nation's regeneration. Drawing on an array of primary sources from French archives, Regeneration through Empire is the first book to analyze the relationship between depopulation and imperialism"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Vendor-supplied metadata. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 1870-1940|2fast 650 0 Imperialism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85064628|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zFrance|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79006404-781|xColonies|xHistory.|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012516 650 0 Childbirth|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85023401|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zFrance|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79006404-781|xColonies |xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002012516 650 0 Colonists|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh96005040|xGovernment policy|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005269|zAfrica, French-speaking |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh96008812-781 |xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005024 650 0 Family policy|zFrance|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2009124103|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Imperialism|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/968140 650 7 Colonies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/868456 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Imperialism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/968126 650 7 Childbirth|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/854789 650 7 Childbirth.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/854780 650 7 Colonists.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/868479 650 7 Government policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1353198 650 7 Family policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/920433 650 7 Colonization.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/868483 650 7 Population policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1071601 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 651 0 France|xColonies|zAfrica|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh88007194|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 0 France|xHistory|yThird Republic, 1870-1940.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85051411 651 0 Africa, North|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85001631|xColonization|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005562|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 0 Madagascar|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80087494 |xColonization|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005562|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 651 0 France|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79006404 |xPopulation policy|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00006970|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 0 France|xPolitics and government|y1870-1940.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85051483 651 7 France.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204289 651 7 French-speaking Africa.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1692677 651 7 Africa.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1239509 651 7 North Africa.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1239515 651 7 Madagascar.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1209332 655 0 Electronic book. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aAndersen, Margaret Cook.|tRegeneration through empire : French pronatalists and colonial settlement in the Third Republic.|dLincoln : University of Nebraska Press, [2015]|kFrance overseas: studies in empire and decolonization|z9780803244979|w(DLC) 2014027851 830 0 France overseas : studies in empire and decolonization. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=898776|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
