Tens of millions of people lost their lives, as Chinese rebels, imperial armies, and local militias clashed across the Yangzi Delta. Yet while the Rebellion has been intensely studied, little is known of how individuals coped with these cataclysmic events. Drawing upon a rich array of primary sources, this study explores the issues that preoccupied Chinese and Western survivors. Individuals, families, and communities grappled with fundamental questions of loyalty and loss as they struggled to rebuild shattered cities, bury the dead, and make sense of the horrors that they had witnessed. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 647 7 Taiping Rebellion|c(China :|d1850-1864)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1355120 648 7 1850-1864|2fast 650 0 Collective memory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh2006002444|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79091151-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Collective memory.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1739814 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 651 0 China|xHistory|yTaiping Rebellion, 1850-1864|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85024092|xCasualties. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99004906 651 0 China|xHistory|yTaiping Rebellion, 1850-1864|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85024092|xAtrocities. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99002431 651 7 China.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1206073 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMeyer-Fong, Tobie S.
