Although marginalized in his own time largely due to his radical attack on Zhu Xi (1130-1200), Yan became elevated as a great thinker during the early twentieth century because of the drastic changes of modern Chinese intellectual climate. In Body, Ritual and Identity : A New Interpretation of the Early Qing Confucian Yan Yuan (1635- 1704), Yang Jui-sung has demonstrated that the complexity of Yan's ideas and his hatred for Zhu Xi in particular need be interpreted in light of his traumatic life experiences, his frustration over the fall of the Ming dynasty, and anxiety caused by the civil service examination system. Moreover, he should be better understood as a cultural critic of the lifestyle of educated elites of late imperial China. By critically analyzing Yan's changing intellectual status and his criticism that the elite lifestyle was unhealthy and feminine, this new interpretation of Yan Yuan serves to shed new light on our understanding of the features as well as problems of educated elite culture in late imperial China"--Provided by publisher. 588 Description based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on June 06, 2016). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Yan, Yuan,|d1635-1704.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n82067578 600 10 Yan, Yuan,|d1635-1704|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n82067578|xPolitical and social views.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002011435 600 10 Yan, Yuan,|d1635-1704|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n82067578|xCriticism and interpretation.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005576 600 10 Zhu, Xi,|d1130-1200|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n81008179|xAdversaries.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99002224 600 17 Yan, Yuan,|d1635-1704.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /92450 600 17 Zhu, Xi,|d1130-1200.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 66854 648 7 1644-1912|2fast 650 0 Philosophers|zChina|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008109200 650 0 Confucianists|zChina|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2009121377 650 0 Radicals|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85110377|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79091151-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Elite (Social sciences)|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008119354|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Civil service|zChina|xExaminations|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008101069 650 7 Political and social views.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1353986 650 7 Criticism and interpretation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1198648 650 7 Enemies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1735610 650 7 Philosophers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1060746 650 7 Confucianists.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/875087 650 7 Radicals.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1087037 650 7 Elite (Social sciences)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/908113 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Civil service.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/862730 650 7 Examinations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/917492 651 0 China|xHistory|yQing dynasty, 1644-1912.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85024078 651 7 China.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1206073 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aYang, Jui-sung, 1963-|tBody, ritual and identity.|dLeiden ; Boston : Brill, 2016|z9789004315457 |w(DLC) 2016008445 830 0 Sinica Leidensia ;|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n42031195|vv. 132. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1227026|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
