As Jason McGraw demonstrates, ending slavery fostered a new sense of citizenship, one shaped both by a model of universal rights and by the particular freedom struggles of African-descended people. Colombia's Caribbean coast was at the center of these transformations, in which women and men of color, the region's majority population, increasingly asserted the freedom to control their working conditions, fight in civil wars, and express their religious beliefs. The history of Afro-Colombians as principal social actors after emancipation, McGraw argues, opens up a new view on the practice and meaning of citizenship. Crucial to this conception of citizenship was the right of recognition. Indeed, attempts to deny the role of people of color in the republic occurred at key turning points exactly because they demanded public recognition as citizens. In connecting Afro-Colombians to national development, The Work of Recognition also places the story within the broader contexts of Latin American popular politics, culture, and the African diaspora. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 1810-|2fast 650 0 Black people|zColombia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2010002648|zAtlantic Coast|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85009178-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Black people|zColombia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2010002648|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Citizenship|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85026205|zColombia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79084451-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Freed persons|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85051692|zColombia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79084451-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Labor|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh90004091 |zColombia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79084451 -781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005024 650 0 Recognition (Philosophy)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh92001089|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zColombia|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79084451-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Enslaved persons|xEmancipation|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85123317|zColombia|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79084451-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Working class|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85073639|zColombia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79084451-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Black people.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/833880 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Citizenship.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/861909 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 650 7 Race relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1086509 650 7 Freed persons.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/933987 650 7 Labor.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/989798 650 7 Recognition (Philosophy)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1091449 650 7 Enslaved persons|xEmancipation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1120540 650 7 Enslaved persons|xEmancipation|xBritish colonies.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1120542 650 7 Enslaved persons|xEmancipation|xFrench colonies.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1120546 650 7 Working class.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1180418 651 0 Colombia|xPolitics and government|y1810-|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85028507 651 0 Colombia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79084451 |xRace relations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00007552|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 651 7 Colombia|zAtlantic Coast.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1240707 651 7 Colombia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205916 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMcGraw, Jason.|tWork of recognition. |dChapel Hill : The University of North Carolina Press, 2014|z9781469617862|w(DLC) 2014007169|w(OCoLC)875999973 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=810485|zOnline eBook.
