Chávez came to Oxnard, California, in 1958, twenty years after he lived briefly in the city as a child with his migrant farmworker family during the Great Depression. This time Chávez returned as the organizer of the Community Service Organization to support the unionization campaign of the United Packinghouse Workers of America. Together the two groups challenged the agricultural industry's use of braceros (imported contract laborers) who displaced resident farmworkers. The Mexican and Mexican American populations in Oxnard were involved in cultural struggles and negotiations long before Chávez led them in marches and active protests. Curious Unions explores the ways in which the Mexican community forged intriguing partnerships with other ethnic groups within Oxnard in the first half of the twentieth century and the resulting economic exchanges, cultural practices, and labor and community activism. Frank P. Barajas examines how the Oxnard ethnic Mexican population exercised its agency in alliance with other groups and organizations to meet their needs before large-scale protests and labor unions were engaged. Curious Unions charts how the cultural negotiations that took place in the Oxnard ethnic Mexican community helped shape and empower farm labor organizing."--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Foreign workers, Mexican|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85003519|zCalifornia|zOxnard|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81071622-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Mexican Americans|xCivil rights|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85084500|zCalifornia|zOxnard|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81071622-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Labor movement|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh89000876|zCalifornia|zOxnard|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81071622-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Mexican Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85084498|xCultural assimilation|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005453|zCalifornia|zOxnard|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81071622-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Foreign workers, Mexican.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1729163 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Mexican Americans|xCivil rights.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1019081 650 7 Labor movement.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/990079 650 7 Mexican Americans|xCultural assimilation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1019085 650 7 Mexican Americans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1019072 651 7 California|zOxnard.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1213989 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBarajas, Frank P., 1964-|tCurious unions.|dLincoln, Neb. : University of Nebraska Press, ©2012|z9780803237919|w(DLC) 2012013286|w(OCoLC)785862600 830 0 Race and ethnicity in the American West.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2004144633 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=495501|zOnline eBook.
