This book traces the formation of that classical paradigm in the development of ancient storytelling from Homer to Heliodorus. To tell this story, the book sets out to rehabilitate the idea of 'plot', notoriously disconnected from any recognized system of terminology in recent literary theory. The first part of the book draws on current developments in narratalogy and cognitive science to propose a new way of formally describing the way stories are structured and understood. 520 8 This model is then used to write a history of the emergence of the classical plot type in the four ancient genres that shaped it - Homeric epic, fifth-century tragedy, New Comedy, and the Greek novel - with new insights into the fundamental narrative poetics of each."- -Jacket. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Classical literature|xHistory and criticism|xTheory, etc. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008101120 650 0 Classical literature|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85026706|vStories, plots, etc.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012041 650 0 Narration (Rhetoric)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85089833 650 0 Rhetoric, Ancient.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85113634 650 7 Classical literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 863509 650 7 Narration (Rhetoric)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1032927 650 7 Rhetoric, Ancient.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1096982 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Stories, plots, etc.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1423908 655 7 Plot summaries.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026149 655 7 Plot summaries.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919954 776 08 |iPrint version:|aLowe, N.J.|tClassical plot and the invention of Western narrative.|dCambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2000|z0521771765|w(DLC) 99052857|w(OCoLC)42680495 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=73939|zOnline eBook.
