Robert Kurzban shows us that the key to understanding our behavioral inconsistencies lies in understanding the mind's design. The human mind consists of many specialized units designed by the process of evolution by natural selection. While these modules sometimes work together seamlessly, they don't always, resulting in impossibly contradictory beliefs, vacillations between patience and impulsiveness, violations of our supposed moral principles, and overinflated views of ourselves. This modular, evolutionary psychological view of the mind undermines deeply held intuitions about ourselves, as well as a range of scientific theories that require a "self" with consistent beliefs and preferences. Modularity suggests that there is no "I." Instead, each of us is a contentious "we"--A collection of discrete but interacting systems whose constant conflicts shape our interactions with one another and our experience of the world. In clear language, full of wit and rich in examples, Kurzban explains the roots and implications of our inconsistent minds, and why it is perfectly natural to believe that everyone else is a hypocrite. 545 KurzbanRobert: Robert Kurzban is associate professor of psychology and founder of the Pennsylvania Laboratory for Experimental Evolutionary Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2008, he won the inaugural Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution from the Human Behavior and Evolution Society. 546 In English. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF title page (publisher's Web site, viewed October 27 2015). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Evolutionary psychology.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2003003007 650 0 Modularity (Psychology)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh91006051 650 0 Psychology|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85108459|vCognitive Psychology. 650 0 Psychology.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85108459 650 0 Science|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85118553|vCognitive Science. 650 0 Self-deception.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85119723 650 7 Evolutionary psychology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/917348 650 7 Modularity (Psychology)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1024509 650 7 Psychology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1081447 650 7 Science.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1108176 650 7 Self-deception.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1111566 655 4 Electronic books. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=356020|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
