Kieninger challenges the traditional Cold War narrative that détente prolonged the division of Europe and precipitated America's decline in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Rather, he argues that policymakers in the U.S. Department of State and in Western Europe envisaged the stability enabled by détente as a precondition for change, as Communist regimes saw a sense of security as a prerequisite for opening up their societies to Western influence over time. Kieninger identifies the Helsinki Accords, Lyndon Johnson's bridge building, and Willy Brandt's Ostpolitik as efforts aimed at constructive changes in Eastern Europe through a multiplication of contacts, communication, and cooperation on all societal levels. This study also illuminates the longevity of America's policy of peaceful change against the background of the nuclear stalemate and the military status quo"--Provided by publisher. 588 Description based on print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 20 Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (Organization)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n93056051|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 610 27 Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (Organization)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/687848 647 7 Cold War|d(1945-1989)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1754978 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1963-1969|2fast 648 7 1969-1974|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Detente|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85037292|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Communication in politics|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85029088|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Cold War|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh88005637|xDiplomatic history.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005617 650 0 National security|zUnited States|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008108257 650 0 National security|zEurope|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008108222|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 International relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/977053 650 7 Detente.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/891616 650 7 Communication in politics.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/870243 650 7 Diplomatic history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1905576 650 7 National security.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1033711 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE / Government / International.|2bisacsh 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE / International Relations / General. |2bisacsh 650 7 Diplomacy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/894188 650 7 Diplomatic relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1907412 651 0 United States|xForeign relations|zEurope.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007100023 651 0 Europe|xForeign relations|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008103355 651 0 United States|xForeign relations|y1963-1969.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140101 651 0 United States|xForeign relations|y1969-1974.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140102 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 651 7 Europe.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1245064 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKieninger, Stephan.|tDynamic détente |z9781498532426|w(DLC) 2016001245 830 0 Harvard Cold War studies book series.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n2001032060 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1193909|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
