Author Joshua Shannon reveals an oddly stringent realism in the period, tracing artists' rejection of essential truths in favor of surface appearances. Dubbing this tendency factualism, Shannon illuminates not only the Cold War's preoccupation with data but also the rise of a pervasive culture of fact. Focusing on the United States and West Germany, where photodocumentary traditions intersected with 1960s politics, Shannon investigates a broad variety of art, ranging from conceptual photography and earthworks to photorealist painting and abstraction. He looks closely at art by Bernd and Hilla Becher, Robert Bechtle, Vija Celmins, Douglas Huebler, Gerhard Richter, and others. These artists explored fact's role as a modern paradigm for talking, thinking, and knowing. Their art, Shannon concludes, helps to explain both the ambivalent anti- humanism of today's avant-garde art and our own culture of fact. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 647 7 Cold War|d(1945-1989)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1754978 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Realism in art.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85111768 650 0 Cold War in art.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2013000301 650 0 Art, Modern|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85007793|xHistory|y20th century|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165|xThemes, motives.|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008982 650 7 Realism in art.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1091231 650 7 Art, Modern.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/816615 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Themes, motives.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1355139 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aShannon, Joshua, 1972-|tRecording machine.|dNew Haven, CT : Yale University Press, 2017 |z0300187270|w(OCoLC)961312415 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1543578|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
