Bush between 1989 and 1991, including transcripts of conversations between top leaders on the rapid and monumental events of the final days of the Cold War. Particularly effective interlocutors were the foreign ministers Eduard Shevardnadze and James Baker, especially interesting when they interacted directly with Bush or Gorbachev. The documents were obtained from the Gorbachev Foundation and the Russian State Archives and from the United States government through requests under the Freedom of Information Act. Taking place at a time of revolutionary change in Eastern Europe, stimulated in part by Gorbachev and by Eastern Europeans (the Solidarity movement, dissidents, reform communists), the Malta Summit of 1989 and subsequent meetings helped defuse any potential for superpower conflict. Each of the five summits is covered in a separate chapter, introduced by an essay that places the transcripts in historical context. The anthology offers a fascinating glimpse into the relationship that defined the last, waning years of the Cold War--a unique record of these historic, highest-level conversations that effectively brought it to a close. The quality and scope of the dialogue between these world leaders was unprecedented and is likely never to be repeated. 546 In English. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Gorbachev, Mikhail Sergeevich,|d1931-2022.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n85050740 600 10 Bush, George,|d1924-2018.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n80015879 600 17 Gorbachev, Mikhail Sergeevich,|d1931-2022.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/147255 600 17 Bush, George,|d1924-2018.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/50051 647 7 Cold War|d(1945-1989)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1754978 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1989-1993|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Cold War|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh88005637|xDiplomatic history|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005617|vSources.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012007 650 0 Summit meetings|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh87007171|xHistory|y20th century|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165|vSources.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012007 650 0 Great powers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85057001|xHistory|y20th century|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165|vSources.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012007 650 7 International relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/977053 650 7 Summit meetings.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1138541 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Great powers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/947048 650 7 Diplomatic history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1905576 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE / International Relations / Diplomacy. |2bisacsh 650 7 Diplomacy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/894188 650 7 Diplomatic relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1907412 651 0 United States|xForeign relations|zSoviet Union|vSources. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007100097 651 0 Soviet Union|xForeign relations|zUnited States|vSources. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008117074 651 0 United States|xForeign relations|y1989-1993|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh89000003|vSources. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012007 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 651 7 Soviet Union.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210281 653 Cold War, Diplomatic history, Foreign relations, Late 20th century, Soviet Union, United States. 655 7 Sources.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423900 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 700 1 Savranskaya, Svetlana,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no2005010483|eeditor. 700 1 Blanton, Thomas S.,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n92114311|eeditor. 700 1 Melyakova, Anna,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2012141688|eeditorial assistant. 730 0 |kSelections from (work):|aLast superpower summits. 776 08 |iPrint version:|z9633863449|z9789633863442 |w(OCoLC)1103690002 830 0 National Security Archive Cold War readers.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2001040182|x1587-2416 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=3377344|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
