It documents the internal dynamics of a trade network system based on a case study of 'Berber' traders from the Wād Nūn region, who specialized in outfitting camel caravans in the nineteenth century. Through an examination of contracts, correspondence, fatwas and interviews with retired caravaners, Professor Lydon shows how traders used their literacy skills in Arabic and how they had recourse to experts of Islamic law to regulate their long-distance transactions. The book also examines the strategies devised by women to participate in caravan trade. By embracing a continental approach, this study bridges the divide between West African and North African studies. The work will be of interest to historians of Africa, the Middle East, and the world and to scholars of long- distance trade, Muslim societies and Islamic law. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1899|2fast 650 0 Trade routes|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85136507|zSahara|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85116501-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Trade routes|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85136507|zAfrica, West|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85001688-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 7 Commerce.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/869279 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Trade routes.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1153852 651 0 Sahara|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85116501 |xCommerce|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99001412|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 651 0 Africa, West|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85001688|xCommerce|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001412|xHistory|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 651 7 Sahara.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1242088 651 7 West Africa.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1239521 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aLydon, Ghislaine.|tOn Trans-Saharan trails.|dCambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2009|z9780521887243|z0521887240|w(DLC) 2008019074 |w(OCoLC)226911748 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=273774|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
