In this age of health databases and increasing connectedness, however, the confidentiality of patient information is rapidly becoming a concern at the forefront of worldwide ethical and political debate. In Contesting Medical Confidentiality, Andreas-Holger Maehle travels back to the origins of this increasingly relevant issue. He offers the first comparative analysis of professional and public debates on medical confidentiality in the United States, Britain, and Germany during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when traditional medical secrecy first came under pressure from demands of disclosure in the name of public health. Maehle structures his study around three representative questions of the time that remain salient today: Do physicians have a privilege to refuse court orders to reveal confidential patient details? Is there a medical duty to report illegal procedures to the authorities? Should doctors breach confidentiality in order to prevent the spread of disease? Considering these debates through a unique historical perspective, Contesting Medical Confidentiality illuminates the ethical issues and potentially grave consequences that continue to stir up public debate. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF title page (EBSCO, viewed September 22, 2016). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1999|2fast 650 0 Confidential communications|xPhysicians|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85030938|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006167 650 0 Confidential communications|xPhysicians|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85030938|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Confidential communications|xPhysicians|zUnited States |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2009121341 |xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005024 650 0 Confidential communications|xPhysicians|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85030938|zGreat Britain |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79023147-781 |xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005024 650 0 Confidential communications|xPhysicians|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85030938|zGermany|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80125931-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Physicians|xProfessional ethics.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010106263 650 0 Privacy, Right of|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85107029|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Confidential communications|xPhysicians.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/874720 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Privacy, Right of.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1077444 650 7 Physicians|xProfessional ethics.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1062899 650 7 LAW|xAdministrative Law & Regulatory Practice.|2bisacsh 651 2 United States.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D014481 651 2 United Kingdom.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D006113 651 2 Germany.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D005858 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204623 651 7 Germany.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210272 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMaehle, Andreas-Holger, 1957- |tContesting medical confidentiality.|dChicago ; London : The University of Chicago Press, 2016|z9780226404820 |z022640482X|w(DLC) 2016008497|w(OCoLC)941714608 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1334026|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
