Once put to death, the criminal cadaver did not come to rest. Its movement through public spaces indicated the potent afterlife of the deviant body, especially its ability to transform civic life. Focusing on material culture associated with key sites of punishment, Anuradha Gobin argues that the circulation of visual media related to criminal punishments was a particularly effective means of generating discourse and formulating public opinion, especially regarding the efficacy of civic authority. Certain types of objects related to criminal punishments served a key role in asserting republican ideals and demonstrating the ability of officials to maintain order and control. Conversely, the circulation of other types of images, especially inexpensive paintings and prints, had the potential to subvert official messages. As Gobin shows, visual culture thus facilitated a space in which potentially dissenting positions could be formulated while also bringing together seemingly disparate groups of people in a quest for new knowledge. Combining a diverse array of sources including architecture, paintings, prints, anatomical illustrations, and preserved body parts, Picturing Punishment demonstrates how the criminal corpse was reactivated, reanimated, and in many ways reintegrated into society."--|cProvided by publisher. 588 Description based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on September 30, 2021). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 17th century|2fast 648 7 1600-1699|2fast 650 0 Punishment in art.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh96012029 650 0 Dead in art.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh97003226 650 0 Prosecution in art.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh97000615 650 0 Justice in art.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85071138 650 0 Art, Dutch|y17th century|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00010139|xThemes, motives.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2001008982 650 0 Punishment|zNetherlands|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2010109164|xHistory|y17th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006123 650 0 Criminals|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85036577|zNetherlands|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n78085423-781|xDeath|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh99002023|xHistory|y17th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006123 650 0 Crime|zNetherlands|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2009122328|xHistory|y17th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006123 650 7 Punishment in art.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1084143 650 7 Dead in art.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/888419 650 7 Prosecution in art.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1079380 650 7 Justice in art.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/985151 650 7 Art, Dutch.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/816183 650 7 Themes, motives.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1355139 650 7 Punishment.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1084107 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Criminals.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/883516 650 7 Death.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/888613 650 7 Crime.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/882984 650 7 ART / History / Renaissance.|2bisacsh 650 7 Art, Dutch|xThemes, motives.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/816192 651 7 Netherlands.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204034 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGobin, Anuradha.|tPicturing punishment. |dToronto ; Buffalo ; London : University of Toronto Press, 2021|z1487503806|z9781487503802|w(OCoLC)1223011948 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2988308|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
