Warikoo challenges teachers, administrators, and parents to look beneath the outward manifestations of youth culture -- the clothing, music, and tough talk -- to better understand the internal struggle faced by many minority students as they try to fit in with peers while working to lay the groundwork for successful lives. Using ethnographic, survey, and interview data in two racially diverse, low-achieving high schools, Warikoo analyzes seemingly oppositional styles, tastes in music, and school behaviors and finds that most teens try to find a balance between success with peers and success in school. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Youth|xSocial life and customs|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2007002729|vCross-cultural studies. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001526 650 0 Children of immigrants|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85023552|vCross-cultural studies.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001526 650 0 High school students|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85060709|xSocial life and customs|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008851|vCross- cultural studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh99001526 650 0 Assimilation (Sociology)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85008793 650 0 Academic achievement|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85000296|vCross-cultural studies.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001526 650 0 Group identity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85057485|vCross-cultural studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001526 650 7 Youth|xSocial life and customs.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1183539 650 7 Children of immigrants.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/855365 650 7 High school students|xSocial life and customs.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/956223 650 7 High school students.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 956174 650 7 Assimilation (Sociology)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/819095 650 7 Academic achievement.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 794949 650 7 Group identity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/948442 650 7 Youth.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001520 655 0 Electronic books|xCross-cultural studies. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books|vCross-cultural studies. 655 7 Cross-cultural studies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1423769 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWarikoo, Natasha Kumar, 1973-|tBalancing acts.|dBerkeley : University of California Press, ©2011 |z9780520262102|w(DLC) 2010013984|w(OCoLC)607655705 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=354510|zOnline eBook.
