Still a slave, she married and had children, who also became the property of the De Harts. But after Union forces captured New Orleans in 1862 during the American Civil War, Herera's owners fled to Havana, taking three of her small children with them. Just how far the rights of freed slaves extended was unclear to black and white people alike, and so when Mary De Hart returned to New Orleans in 1865 to visit friends, she was surprised to find herself taken into custody as a kidnapper. The case of Rose Herera's abducted children made its way through New Orleans' courts, igniting a custody battle that revealed the prospects and limits of justice during Reconstruction. Rose Herera's perseverance brought her children's plight to the attention of members of the U.S. Senate and State Department, who turned a domestic conflict into an international scandal. 546 In English. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Herrera, Rose,|dapproximately 1835-|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n2015005763 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1899|2fast 650 0 African American women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85001923|zLouisiana|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79138970-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Freed persons|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85051692|zLouisiana|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79138970-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Kidnapping|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85072244|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n78095330-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 African Americans|xLegal status, laws, etc.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85001962 650 0 Custody of children|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008100403|vCase studies.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Mother and child|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010102416|vCase studies.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Slavery|zLouisiana|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2010113254|xHistory|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Slavery|zCuba|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2010113231|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 7 African American women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/799438 650 7 Freed persons.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/933987 650 7 Kidnapping.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/987322 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 African Americans|xLegal status, laws, etc.|2fast|0https:/ /id.worldcat.org/fast/799632 650 7 Custody of children.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 885495 650 7 Mother and child.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1026878 650 7 Slavery.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1120426 650 7 Child custody.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0000254 651 0 Louisiana|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008116082 651 7 Louisiana.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1207035 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 651 7 Cuba.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205805 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Case studies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423765 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 655 7 Case studies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2017026140 776 08 |iPrint version:|aRothman, Adam, 1971-|tBeyond freedom's reach|z9780674368125|w(DLC) 2014029348|w(OCoLC)902801815 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=957744|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
