The Quest for an Elusive Danubian Security, 1933-1936. 520 2 "An exploration of British foreign policy towards interwar Danubian Europe"--|cProvided by publisher 520 2 "The British Foreign Office's attitude towards the alliance known as the Little Entente, comprised of Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Romania, is the primary focus of this study, though its attitude towards Hungary and Austria is also explored to a lesser extent. Danubian Europe presented constant and serious security risks for European peace and stability and, for that reason, contrary to conventional wisdom, it commanded the attention of British diplomacy with a view to appeasing local conflicts. Britain and Interwar Danubian Europe examines the manner in which the Foreign Office perceived and treated the antagonism between the Little Entente and Hungary, on the one hand, and the impact that the former had in connection with Franco-Italian rivalry in Central/ South-Eastern Europe, on the other. With Hitler's accession to power the Little Entente was viewed in Whitehall in relation to its place in the prospective policy for preserving Austrian independence and containing German aggression in the region. Dragan Bakic argues that the British approach to security problems in Danubian Europe had certain permanent features which stemmed from the general British outlook on the new successor states-- the members of the Little Entente--founded on the ruins of the Habsburg monarchy. This book shows that it was the lack of confidence in their stability and permanence, as well as the misperceptions about the motives and intentions of the policies pursued by other powers towards Central/South-Eastern Europe, which accounted for the apparent sluggishness and ineffectiveness of the Foreign Office's dealings with security challenges. Based on extensive, original archival research, this is a fascinating volume for any historian keen to know more about the 20th-century history of East-Central Europe or British foreign policy in the interwar years"--|cProvided by publisher 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 10 Great Britain.|bForeign Office|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n50000301|xHistory|y20th century.|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 610 17 Great Britain.|bForeign Office.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/510128 630 00 Little Entente|d(1920-1939)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n91024928 630 7 Little Entente (1920-1939)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1773815 630 07 Little Entente (1920-1939)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1773815 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1910-1936|2fast 648 7 1918-1945|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 National security|zEurope|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008108222|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 International relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/977053 650 7 National security.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1033711 650 7 20th century history: c 1900 to c 2000.|2bicssc 650 7 British & Irish history.|2bicssc 650 7 HISTORY|zEurope|xEastern.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|zEurope|xGreat Britain.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|xModern|x20th Century.|2bisacsh 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xGovernment|xInternational.|2bisacsh 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xInternational Relations|xGeneral. |2bisacsh 650 7 Diplomatic relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1907412 651 0 Great Britain|xForeign relations|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85056684|zDanube River Region. 651 0 Danube River Region|xForeign relations|zGreat Britain. 651 0 Great Britain|xForeign relations|y1910-1936.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85056715 651 0 Europe|xPolitics and government|y1918-1945.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85045749 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204623 651 7 Danube River Region.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1343449 651 7 Europe.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1245064 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBakić, Dragan.|tBritain and interwar Danubian Europe.|dLondon ; New York : Bloomsbury Academic, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2017 |z9781474250085|w(DLC) 2016047248|w(OCoLC)957546922 830 0 Bloomsbury advances in translation.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2013044623 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1500001|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
