"New light" evangelists of the eighteenth century, enslaved African Americans, demagogic politicians, and modern American film-makers have used the devil to damn their enemies, explain the nature of evil and injustice, mount social crusades, construct a national identity, and express anxiety about matters as diverse as the threat of war to the dangers of deviant sexuality. The idea of the monstrous and the bizarre providing cultural metaphors that interact with historical change is not new. Poole takes a new tack by examining this idea in conjunction with the concerns of American religious history. The book shows that both the range and the scope of American religiousness made theological evil an especially potent symbol. Satan appears repeatedly on the political, religious, and cultural landscape of the United States, a shadow self to the sunny image of American progress and idealism. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Devil|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85037376 |xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00002758|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n78095330-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Devil|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85037376 |xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00005651|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Devil|xChristianity.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008102230 650 0 Good and evil|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85055872|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Good and evil|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85055872|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zUnited States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 National characteristics, American.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85089950 650 0 Political culture|zUnited States|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010106956 650 0 Violence|zUnited States|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010117911 650 7 Devil|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /891985 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Devil.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/891974 650 7 Devil|xChristianity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1750952 650 7 Good and evil|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/944906 650 7 Good and evil.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/944894 650 7 National characteristics, American.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1033342 650 7 Political culture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1069263 650 7 Violence.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1167224 650 7 Civilization.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/862898 651 0 United States|xReligious life and customs.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140506 651 0 United States|xCivilization.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85139934 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aPoole, W.
