These land-hungry first and second generation immigrants struggled with poverty nearly as severe as that of their Dakota neighbours, often becoming sharecropping tenants of Dakota landowners. Yet the homesteaders' impoverishment did not impede native dispossession: by 1929 Scandinavians owned more reservation land than did Dakotas. Although this historical encounter at Spirit Lake took place in a small corner of eastern North Dakota, it encapsulates the story of conquest and white settlement and the less publicized but equally important, story of the dispossession and survival of Native Americans. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Scandinavian Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85117958|zNorth Dakota|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79068662-781|zDevils Lake Region (Lake) |xHistory. 650 0 Scandinavian Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85117958|xLand tenure|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00006381|zNorth Dakota|zFort Totten Indian Reservation.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh89002945-781 650 0 Indians of North America|xLand tenure|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85065310|zNorth Dakota|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79068662-781|zDevils Lake Region (Lake) 650 0 Indian allotments|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh95005328|zNorth Dakota|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79068662-781|zDevils Lake Region (Lake) 650 0 Rural women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85115935|zNorth Dakota|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79068662-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Dakota Indians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85035484|zNorth Dakota|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79068662-781|vInterviews.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001682 650 0 Norwegians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85092742|zNorth Dakota|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79068662-781|vInterviews.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001682 650 7 Scandinavian Americans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1106373 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Land tenure.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/991362 650 7 Indians of North America|xLand tenure.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/969807 650 7 Indian allotments.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 969020 650 7 Norwegians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1039481 650 7 Ethnic relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 916005 650 7 Rural women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1101883 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xDiscrimination & Race Relations.|2bisacsh 650 7 Dakota Indians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/887107 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xMinority Studies.|2bisacsh 651 0 Spirit Lake Tribe, North Dakota|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no97057398|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 0 North Dakota|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79068662|xEthnic relations.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005646 651 0 Fort Totten Indian Reservation (N.D.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh89002945|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 7 North Dakota.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205582 651 7 North Dakota|zFort Totten Indian Reservation.|2fast|0https ://id.worldcat.org/fast/1251774 651 7 Spirit Lake Tribe, North Dakota.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1715439 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Interviews.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423832 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Interviews.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026115 776 08 |iPrint version:|aHansen, Karen V.|tEncounter on the Great Plains|z9780199746811|w(DLC) 2013004849|w(OCoLC)827724458 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=667810|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
