The legacy of Great War health policy. 520 "During and after World War I, policy makers, soldiers, and veterans laid the groundwork for the extension of government-sponsored medical care to millions of former service members. In the process, they built a pillar of the American welfare state. Legislation and rehabilitation plans formulated shortly after the U.S. entered the Great War aimed to minimize the government's long-term obligations to veterans, but within a decade, those who had served gained conditional access to their own direct assistance agency and a national system of hospitals. Burdens of War explains why that drastic transition occurred, and how one group of citizens won the right to obtain publicly funded health services. The story of the early roots of service-related health policies has a variety of larger implications. It shows how veterans' welfare shifted from centering on pension and domicile care programs rooted in the nineteenth century to the provision of access to direct medical services; how shifting ideals about hospitals and medical care influenced policy at the dusk of the Progressive Era; how race, class, and gender shaped the health-related experiences of soldiers, veterans, and caregivers; and how interest groups capitalized on a tense political and social climate to bring about change. On a general level, an examination of the roots of a nationwide veterans' hospital system demonstrates how privileges were won in the twentieth-century United States. It reveals a moment of state expansion, but also illustrates the wider tendency of the U.S. government to award entitlements selectively. The policies that paved the way for the advent of a veterans' medical system thus deserve to be considered as foundational in the development and shape of the American welfare state."--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 10 United States.|bVeterans Bureau|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81058757|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 610 17 United States.|bVeterans Bureau.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/557205 647 7 World War|d(1914-1918)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1180746 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Veterans|xMedical care|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008113191|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 World War, 1914-1918|xMedical care|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010119539|zUnited States.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 World War, 1914-1918|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85148236|xVeterans|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006447|xMedical care|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00005607|zUnited States |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 |xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Disabled veterans|xRehabilitation|zUnited States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008102290|xHistory |y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Veterans' hospitals|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh92003010|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Veterans|xServices for|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008113195|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Medical policy|zUnited States|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh2010101295|y20th century.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012476 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Veterans|xMedical care.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1165761 650 7 Disabled veterans|xRehabilitation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/894663 650 7 Veterans' hospitals.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1165817 650 7 Veterans|xServices for.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1165797 650 7 Medical policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1014505 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aAdler, Jessica L., 1978-|tBurdens of war.|dBaltimore : Johns Hopkins University Press, 2017 |z9781421422879|w(DLC) 2016041512|w(OCoLC)958962947 830 0 Reconfiguring American political history.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n94080715 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1501164|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
