Drawing on the most seminal recent analyses of secularism- -including those of Hussain Ali Agrama and Saba Mahmood, as well as the longstanding work of Talal Asad--Lemons argues that secularism in the post-colonial Indian context entails not the separation of religion from the state, but rather the state's definition and regulation of religion, and hence the inevitable intertwining of religion and politics. Neither a particular disposition, nor a particular content, the secular marks instead this regulatory interest of the state (as well as of non-state actors). This insight enables Lemons to show how a variety of arenas that respond to marital strife and adjudicate divorce among Muslims--ranging from women's arbitration centers (mahila panchayats), to jurists' fatwas, to "Shari'a" courts, to muftis' ritual healing practices--are engaged in the secular work of continually defining religion and law"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on February 26, 2019). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Divorce (Islamic law)|zIndia.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2009123584 650 0 Divorce|xLaw and legislation|zIndia.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2009123583 650 0 Islam and state|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85068426|zIndia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80125948-781 650 0 Secularism|zIndia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008111439 650 0 Legal polycentricity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh98004273|zIndia.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80125948-781 650 7 Divorce (Islamic law)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 895870 650 7 Divorce|xLaw and legislation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/895818 650 7 Islam and state.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 979890 650 7 Secularism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1110732 650 7 Legal polycentricity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 995519 651 7 India.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210276 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aLemons, Katherine.|tDivorcing traditions.|dIthaca, New York : Cornell University Press, 2019|z9781501734762|w(DLC) 2018032569|w(OCoLC)1044768978 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2029929|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
