It examines how single women in one city (including prostitutes, entre- preneurs, and elite plantation ladies) coped with life unencumbered, or unprotected, by husbands. The book pays close attention to the laws affecting Southern gender and sociocultural traditions, focusing especially on how the town's single women maneuvered adroitly but guardedly within the legal arena in which they lived. Joyce Linda Broussard looks at all types of single women--black and white, law-abiding and criminal--including spinsters, widows, divorcees, and abandoned women. She demonstrates the nuanced degrees to which these women understood that the legal, cultural, and social traditions of their place and time could alternately constrain or empower them, often achieving thereby a considerable amount of independence as women"--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1899|2fast 650 0 Single women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85122862|zMississippi|zNatchez|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79042247-781|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Divorced women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85038651|zMississippi|zNatchez|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79042247-781|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Widows|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85146612 |zMississippi|zNatchez|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79042247-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Women, White|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh89006763|zMississippi|zNatchez|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79042247-781|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 African American women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85001923|zMississippi|zNatchez|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79042247-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006167 650 0 Free African Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh94005575|zMississippi|zNatchez|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79042247-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006167 650 0 Women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85147274 |zMississippi|zNatchez|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79042247-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Sex role|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85120663|zMississippi|zNatchez|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79042247-781|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 7 Single women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1119452 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Divorced women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/895945 650 7 Widows.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1174951 650 7 Women, White.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1199568 650 7 African American women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/799438 650 7 Free African Americans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/933834 650 7 Women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1176568 650 7 Sex role.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1114598 650 7 Women.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001509 650 7 Womyn.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001516 650 7 Gender roles.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0000577 651 0 Natchez (Miss.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79042247|xSocial conditions|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008858 651 0 Natchez (Miss.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79042247|xRace relations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00007552|xHistory|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 651 7 Mississippi|zNatchez.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1204961 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBroussard, Joyce Linda.|tStepping lively in place.|dAthens : The University of Georgia Press, 2016 |z9780820345499|w(DLC) 2016000131 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1284832|zOnline eBook.
