Summary |
In many sections of Hindu society in India a woman's life changes drastically after her husband's death. She is expected to lead a life of abstinence and is denied the food that generates heat in the body, that is connected with pleasure. She is also expected to shun color and is to wear white for the rest of her life. Amongst the Bengalis there has been a tradition of sending widows to places of religious pilgrimage, ostensibly to seek salvation (moksha). This tradition, which is almost two hundred years old, is still carried on in some areas. Salvation documents the lives of some of the widows of Vrindavan, one such place of pilgrimage, allowing five of them to express their own views on a life which seems to encompass little but penury and prayer. |
