China: Xinjiang :: India: Kashmir / Nitasha Kaul -- Conclusion. 520 Since 2017, the Chinese authorities have detained hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other Muslim minorities in 'reeducation camps' in China's northwestern Xinjiang autonomous region. While the official reason for this mass detention was to prevent terrorism, the campaign has since become a wholesale attempt to remould the ways of life of these peoples--an experiment in social engineering aimed at erasing their cultures and traditions in order to transform them into 'civilised' citizens as construed by the Chinese state. Through a collection of essays penned by scholars who have conducted extensive research in the region, this volume sets itself three goals: first, to document the reality of the emerging surveillance state and coercive assimilation unfolding in Xinjiang in recent years and continuing today; second, to describe the workings and analyse the causes of these policies, highlighting how these developments insert themselves not only in domestic Chinese trends, but also in broader global dynamics; and, third, to propose action, to heed the progressive Left's call since Marx to change the world and not just analyse it. --|cPublisher's website. 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 650 0 Social change|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008111784|zXinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81018776-781 650 0 Economic development|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2009124570|zXinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81018776-781 650 7 Relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1892706 650 7 Social change.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1122310 650 7 Economic development.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 901785 650 7 Economic history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 901974 650 7 International relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/977053 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 651 0 Xinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu (China)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81018776|xRelations|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh00007590|zChina.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79091151-781 651 0 China|xRelations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008114661|zXinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81018776-781 651 0 Xinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu (China)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81018776|xPolitics and government. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002011436 651 0 Xinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu (China)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81018776|xEconomic conditions.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005736 651 7 China.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1206073 651 7 China|zXinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1212006 655 4 Electronic books. 700 1 Byler, Darren,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2021026950|eeditor. 700 1 Franceschini, Ivan,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2010112095|eeditor. 700 1 Loubere, Nicholas,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2017049987|eeditor. 700 1 Pitzer, Andrea,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2013026766|ewriter of preface. 776 08 |iPrint version:|tXinjiang year zero.|dCanberra, ACT, Australia : Australian National University Press. |z9781760464943|w(OCoLC)1289469184 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv28x2b9h |zOnline ebook.
