To answer this question, we examine determinants of growth spells in Africa and the rest of the world using Bayesian Mode Averaging techniques for proportional hazards models. We define growth spells as periods of sustained growth episodes between growth accelerations and decelerations and then relate the probability that a growth spell ends to various determinants including exogenous shocks, physical and human capital, macroeconomic policy, and sociopolitical factors. Our analysis suggests that determinants of growth spells in Africa are different from those in the rest of the world. The majority of the identified robust determinants have a distinct impact in only one of the two samples: initial income, terms of trade, exchange rate undervaluation and inflation, influence spells only in the world sample, while openness and droughts seem to only affect Africa. In addition, a few common determinants - proxies for human and physical capital and changes in the world interest rate - have very different marginal effects in the two samples. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Economic development|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85040804|zAfrica|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85001531-781|xEconometric models. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005483 650 7 Economic development.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 901785 650 7 Econometric models.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 901567 650 7 Economic conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919582 651 0 Africa|xEconomic conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85001548 651 7 Africa.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1239509 655 4 Electronic books. 710 2 International Monetary Fund.|bResearch Department.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n77001219 776 08 |iPrint version:|aTsangarides, Charalambos G. |tDeterminants of Growth Spells: is Africa Different? |dWashington : International Monetary Fund, ©2012 |z9781475510225 830 0 IMF working paper ;|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no89010263|vWP/12/227. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=568139|zOnline eBook.
