Ryan J. Martin demonstrates that Christian theologians for centuries emphasized affection for God, associated affections with the will, and distinguished affections from passions; generally explaining affections and passions to be inclinations and aversions of the soul. This was Edwards's own view, and he held it throughout his entire ministry. Martin further argues that Edwards's view came not as a result of his reading of John Locke, or the pressures of the Great Awakening (as many Edwardsean scholars argue), but from his own biblical interpretation and theological education. By analysing patristic, medieval and post- medieval thought and the journey of Edwards's psychology, Martin shows how, on their own terms, pre-modern Christians historically defined and described human psychology 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF title page (EBSCO, viewed October 18, 2018). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Edwards, Jonathan,|d1703-1758.|tReligious affections. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2006132834 630 07 Religious affections (Edwards, Jonathan)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1369539 648 7 18th century|2fast 648 7 1700-1799|2fast 650 0 Theology, Doctrinal|zUnited States|xHistory|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010116459|y18th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002012474 650 0 Emotions|xReligious aspects|xChristianity|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008102996|xHistory of doctrines.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00006055 650 7 Theology, Doctrinal.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1149617 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Emotions|xReligious aspects|xChristianity.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/908841 650 7 RELIGION|xChristian Life|xSocial Issues.|2bisacsh 650 7 RELIGION|xChristianity|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 Emotions|xReligious aspects|xChristianity|xHistory of doctrines.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/908842 650 7 RELIGION|xChristian Life|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1913256|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
