They were how governments understood, managed, and defended their territory, and during the two world wars they were produced by the hundreds of millions. Cartographers and journalists predicted the dawning of a "map-minded age," where increasingly state-of-the-art maps would become everyday tools. By the century's end, however, there had been a decisive shift in mapping practices, as the dominant methods of land surveying and print publication were increasingly displaced by electronic navigation systems. In After the Map, William Rankin argues that although this shift did no render traditional maps obsolete, it did radically change our experience of geographic knowledge, from the god's-eye view of the map to the embedded subjectivity of GPS. Likewise, older concerns with geographic truth and objectivity have been upstaged by a new emphasis on simplicity, reliability, and convenience. After the Map shows how this change in geographic perspective is ultimately a transformation of the nature of territory, both social and political. --Dust jacket. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 630 00 International map of the world 1:1,000,000|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n86730095|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 630 7 International map of the world 1:1,000,000.|2fast|0https:/ /id.worldcat.org/fast/1359042 630 07 International map of the world 1:1,000,000.|2fast|0https:/ /id.worldcat.org/fast/1359042 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Cartography|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85020520|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012476 650 0 Navigation|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85090427|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012476 650 0 Global Positioning System|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh86003934|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Electronics in navigation|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85042406|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Grids (Cartography)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85057328|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Universal transverse Mercator projection (Cartography) |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85141077 |xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005024 650 0 Maps|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85080858 |xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00005651|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012476 650 0 Cartography|xMethodology.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2009118469 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Cartography.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/848025 650 7 Navigation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1035085 650 7 Global Positioning System.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/943460 650 7 Electronics in navigation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/907617 650 7 Grids (Cartography)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 947877 650 7 Universal transverse Mercator projection (Cartography) |2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1161570 650 7 Maps.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1008726 650 7 SCIENCE|xEarth Sciences|xGeography.|2bisacsh 650 7 Cartography|xMethodology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/848048 650 7 TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING|xCartography.|2bisacsh 650 7 Kartografie.|2gnd 650 7 Navigation.|2gnd 650 7 Territorialität.|2gnd 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aRankin, William, 1978-|tAfter the map. |dChicago ; London : University of Chicago Press, 2016 |z9780226339368|z022633936X|w(DLC) 2015037815 |w(OCoLC)919341737 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1180799|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
